Overview |
Utowin (ウトウィン, Utowin) is a member of the "Knights Moralis" who works directly under Easthies. He is responsible for teaching spearmanship to the other members of his order.[1]
Appearance[]
Utowin has a rather unkempt appearance, with short messy hair, unshaved stubble and his shirt partially unbuttoned. He has light skin, ginger hair and green eyes. He's often posed in a relaxed way.
Personality[]
Utowin stands out as one of the less serious members of his squad. While he does take his duties seriously, his blunt and casual demeanor contrast with role as a law enforcer, and make him seem less smart than he is, as shown when he tries to worm out information from Olruggio. Contrary to appearances, he's the one who has to nudge Easthies into a regular eat/sleep schedule[1].
History[]
Utowin hails from the Northern, snowy town of Goldley, the very same as Olruggio's where they were equal in age but never directly confronted each other. As a child, Utowin despised studying magic and was "...never the type of kid who could just sit still in their seat" drawing seals for a majority of his time in class, and often skipped them by jumping through windows and leaping around trees. As a result of his deviance, he was a trouble for his teachers and lacked basic knowledge on magic his peers already possessed. As Goldley was a town of Magic, where young capable witches like Olruggio flourished in acclaim and "magic is a necessity of life," he was looked down upon by his classmates and his father; comparing Olruggio as "The Star of Goldley" with awards to his name, and Utowin as merely "...a certain trifling boy who can barely manage to draw a single worthwhile spell." Because of this, Utowin developed a self-deprecating attitude and hung out with delinquents who shared the same looked-down-upon sentiment as him, "kids who couldn't do what the adults told them to."[2]
Before Olruggio's pre-apprentice work trip to Noz that ended in disaster, Utowin talked with his friends and expressed jealousy towards Olruggio as someone who had an ability everybody else considered useful, citing his own wish for his own goodness for sports to be something like that, too; if only he was born in a normal village. As the conversation continued on the topic of Olruggio, his delinquent friends accused Olruggio of "getting a little too big for his boots," accusuing him of exorbitant pride as a means to wish his downfall. This resonated with Utowin's lack of self-worth, and despite initially shrugging the talk off as irritating, and seeing Olruggio's reputation as large as a burden of his "being the hope of none"; Utowin deeply wished to see Olruggio broken down one day, where he will then be the one to comfort him. An act of virtue-signaling that might heal his lacking self-worth: reaching out a hand for somebody who's now below him for a moral reputation and a higher social position. This changed when Olruggio and the surviving witches returned from the Noz, and Olruggio regretted his inability to help more people. Witnessing this, Utowin walked off into the snow in sore regrets of his thoughts. He realized that the reason witches study and study all day was so they could make less mistakes to the loss of lives, as "a witch's failures are permanent": further degrading his own value as "a piece of garbage" who skipped class and even had the idea of such a horrible virtue-signaling. Utowin, realizing all this, accepts he doesn't deserve to be a witch. Yet, he pondered where it was he would be needed, the people who needed him, and the people who would rely on him. He encounters a group of Witches and an equally-young Easthies', and it would mark the beginning of their friendship, as the former follows him wherever he goes.[3]
